Overview
Dr Gabriel dos Santos has a Bachelor in Civil Engineering (State University of Rio de Janeiro, 2010) with exchange periods at University of Porto (2007/2008) and at University of Coimbra (2009/2010), Master (MSc) in Structural Engineering (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, 2014) and PhD in Structural Engineering (Imperial College London, 2019).
Prior to his PhD, he worked for three years as a structural engineer in the design of offshore steel structures. He also worked for four years as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) at Imperial College where he was awarded ‘Highly Commended Graduate Teaching Assistant 2017-2018’ and, subsequently ‘Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy’ (AFHEA) in 2019.
In 2019, he jointed the University of Hertfordshire as a BRE Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering.
Research interests
His research interests lie in the investigation of structural behaviour of steel and composite structures through experiments, numerical modelling and probabilistic assessments aiming the development of more efficient and sustainable structural design guidance.
In his PhD, he developed new equations for the design of structural stainless steel members under concentrated transverse loading. Prior to his PhD, he experimentally investigated new beam-to-column connection typologies between rectangular hollow section (RHS) members.
Teaching specialisms
Currently, he is the module leader of the following modules of the BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire:
- Advanced Structural Analysis and Design (6ENT1074)
- Civil Engineering Structural Design (5ENT1096)
Prior to this, he activelly acted as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in the following modules of the BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering at Imperial College London:
- Computational Methods I & II (CI1-121 and CI2-221)
- Constructionarium (CI2-212)
- Creative Design I & II (CI1-111 and CI2-211)
- Steel Structures and Design (CI4-432)
- Structural Design (CI2-213)
- Structural Mechanics (CI2-231)
Commercial and public engagement
He acts as a reviewer of the academic journals 'International Journal of Steel Structures' (ISSN 1598-2351 ISSN 2093-6311, Springer) and 'Structures' (ISSN 2352-0124, Elsevier).
He is also a graduate member of The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and member of the Offshore Engineering Society (OES).
He is interested in collaborating with industry and society in general through specialized advisory works and/or contributing to the design and product development of innovative and sustainable structural engineering solutions.
