Overview

In addition to being an experienced academic, I am a professional author and have written a novel, two biographies, a memoir and an academic text.  I have a wide range of writing related interests and expertise incuding: ghosts, seances, mediums and Victorian spiritulalism, Dame Rebecca West, Lady Hester Stanhope, Jessie Mario White, linguistic diversity and its links with eco diversity, medical memoir, childlessness, discrimination against the childless, endometriosis awareness, Crowley, Thelema, Mary De Morgan and the use of popular non fiction to raise awareness.  I am a Senior Fellow of the HEA.

Research interests

My most recent work has been researching the experience of childlessness globally, and weaving my interviews and findings into a memoir based book called Childless Voices (Granta 2019).

I have also written biographies of Dame Rebecca West (Pan Mac 2011) and Lady Hester Stanhope, this latter leading to an abiding interest in 18th and 19th century women travellers more generally.

I have also written a novel, A Ghost's Story (Granta, 2016), which focuses on the adventures of the ghost Katie King, within a metafiction that leads the reader to explore the nature of belief, proof and authority.
